Objectives of the assessment course:

  • To understand different purposes of assessment
  • To understand the theoretical frameworks for assessment and the terminology used
  • To understand the assessment methodology most suited for general practice/family medicine
  • To develop skills in using the appropriate assessment tools
  • To practice their skills in assessment and feedback in a secure learning environment
  • To understand the impact of assessment on teaching and learning, and on themselves as teachers
  • To be able to apply their knowledge and skills in their own context as teachers (time, level of students, place, country)

The whole course will be held in English. All teaching materials will be provided in English.

Contents of the course:

It is an entry level course aimed at teachers of family medicine who have little or no experience in the use of assessment methods. It will be of value to those engaged in basic medical education and specialty training, and suitable for university based as well as one-to-one teachers in family practices.

  • Session 1: Introduction and overview of methods in use in family medicine
  • Session 2: Theoretical background to assessment methodologies
  • Session 3: Multiple choice questions including extended matching questions
  • Session 4: Oral examinations
  • Session 5: Workplace based assessment methods
  • Session 6: Consulting/communication skills assessment
  • Session 7: OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations)

Participants should arrive on Wednesday, October 9th, as the course will start on Thursday morning at 8:30 sharp.

The course will be 3 full days, beginning on Thursday, 10th of October, at 8h30, and finishing on Saturday, 12th of October, at 17h30.
